Summary, etc	Cihan Harbi ertesi Cumhuriyet Türkiyesi Batı'ya yönelmiş, "yeni hayat" özlemiyle yaşam tarzında köklü dönüşümlere gitmişti. Reform kaygıları, seküler yaşam özlemi, Osmanlı kültür kodlarının sorgulanışı, nesiller arası uyumsuzluklar yoksul ülkenin insanlarını her geçen gün çözümsüzlüğe yöneltmişti. Türkiye, 1930'lu yıllarda "ideal"lerle donatılmış kendi "yeni insan"ına ulaşıncaya kadar, giriştiği inkılaplarla toplumsal travmayı birlikte yaşayacaktı. Türkiye'de Yeni Hayat çağdaş yaşam özleminin toplumsal travmaya dönüşümünün öyküsü. Nüfus sorunu başta olmak üzere, kadının, gençliğin, çocuğun erken Cumhuriyet döneminde karşılaştığı sorunları ele alan Zafer Toprak, uzun savaş yıllarının yol açtığı bunalımı, yoksulluğun neden olduğu fuhuşu, intiharlarla sonuçlanan umutsuzluğu dönemin kaynaklarına başvurarak gün ışığına çıkarıyor.
