Her yazar, yazdığı en son romanın en iyi romanı olduğunu sanır. Benim bu romanım için böyle düşünmemin nedeni, yapmak istediğimi tam olarak gerçekleştirebilmiş olmamdır. Romanlar, yazılırken yazarlarının elinden kaçıp kurtulmak isterler. Romanın kişileri, kendi özyaşamlarına dönerler, en sonunda da canlarının istediğini yaparlar. Ben hiçbir romanımda bu romanımdaki kadar ipleri elimde tutamadım. Belki bunu konu ve hacim nedeniyle başarmışımdır. Konusu çok sert olan ve hemen hemen polisiye bir roman gibi işlenen bir roman bu. Üstelik oldukça da kısa. Sonuçtan hoşnutum. Bundan önce de en iyi romanım Yüzyıllık Yalnızlık değil de Albaya Mektup Yazan Kimse Yok adlı yapıtımdı. Ben öyle sanıyordum; ve bunu da sık sık söyledim.
