Doğudan Venedik'e gelen tüccarlar gizemli diyarlardan ve halklardan, fırtınalı denizlerden ve eşkıyaların hüküm sürdüğü çöllerden söz ederler. On yedi yaşındaki Marco Polo bu öyküleri dinlerken bir yandan da o daha çocukken yola çıkıp Doğuya giden babası Niccolò ve amcası Matteo'ya katılma hayaliyle yaşar. "Yolculukların yolculuğu" 1271'de gerçekleşir: Niccolò ile Matteo Kubilay Han'a, Kudüs'teki Kutsal Mezar'ın yağını ve Papa'nın yüz elçisini götürmek üzere Çin'den dönerler. Üçlü Venedik'ten yola çıkıp Filistin'e ulaşırlar, oradan Gürcistan, Ermenistan, İran ve Afganistan'a geçerler. Ticaret yapa yapa Uyguristan'ın çöllerini geçerler ve Çin İmparatorluğunun kalbine ulaşırlar; burada Marco Polo Büyük Han'ın güvenini kazanarak dünyanın en güçlü elçilerinden biri haline gelir. |
