Tanzimat'tan başlayarak Menderes dönemi sonuna kadar İstanbul'un mimarlık mirasıyla ilgili koruma politikaları ve ideolojilerini inceler. İktidarların, mimarların ve aydınların yaklaşımlarını araştırır ve sonunda ortaya çıkan koruma proje ve uygulamalarını irdeler. Derlemenin bir de "Ek" bölümü var: "Harabe Kavrayışının Tarihi". Nur Artun bu bölümde, bir sembolik iktidar gösterisi halini aldığı Rönesans'tan başlayarak 20. yüzyıl totaliter rejimlerine kadar etkili olan "harabe" kültüne ışık tutuyor. Koruma politikaları tarihiyle bir alegori olarak harabenin bağlantılarına işaret ediyor.
